Monarch butterflies embark on a marvelous migratory phenomenon. They travel between
2,000 – 5,000 kilometers
; their two-month journey is the second longest migration of all known insects. The butterflies travel from Canada south to the United States and hibernate in the forest mountains of Mexico.
The butterflies hibernate in Mexico in a moderate climate before they head back North.
What it looks like
The Monarch is a showy orange and black butterfly with small white spots.
Where it lives
Throughout their life cycle, Monarchs use three different types of habitat. Only the caterpillars feed on milkweed plants and are confined to meadows and open areas where milkweed grows.
Where it’s been found in Ontario
The Monarch’s range extends from Central America to southern Canada. In Canada, Monarchs are most abundant in southern Ontario and Quebec where milkweed plants and breeding habitat are widespread. During late summer and fall, Monarchs from Ontario migrate to central Mexico where they spend the winter months.
The second generation of monarch butterflies is born in May and June, and then the third generation will be born in July and August. These monarch butterflies will go through exactly the same four stage life cycle as the first generation did, dying two to six weeks after it becomes a beautiful monarch butterfly.

ของเทือกเขาร้อกกี้จะพากันอพยพไปยังอเมริกาใต้และเม็กซิโก เป็นระยะทางกว่า 4 พันกิโลเมตร ใช้เวลานานกว่า 3 เดือน ส่วนกลุ่มที่อยู่ทางตะวันตกของเทือกเขาร้อกกี้จะอพยพมาทางชายฝั่งของแคลิฟอร์เนีย บางส่วนบินมาฝั่งแคนดา หน้าหนาวก็จะกลับถิ่นเดิม ที่น่าทึ่งคือ
ผีเสื้อที่อพยพเหล่านี้กลับมาจำศีลในที่เดิมที่บรรพบุรุษของมันเคยมาทั้งๆ ที่ตัวมันเองไม่เคยรู้จักมาก่อน
ผีเสื้อพวกนี้จะจำศีลอยู่แถบนี้จนหมดฤดูหนาว แล้วพอฤดูใบไม้ผลิมาถึง ประมาณกลางกลางเดือนมีนาคมผีเสื้อเหล่านี้ก็จะอพยพ

ซึ่งนับว่าเป็นสิ่งที่มหัศจรรย์มากๆๆ ผีเสื้อโมนาร์คมีสายพันธุ์ใกล้เคียงกับผีเสื้อหนอนใบรักลายเสือ (Danaus genutia)ที่พบในประเทศไทย แต่พันธุ์ในประเทศไทยไม่อพยพค่ะ
